The Durgapur Projects Power Station
The then Chief Minister Doctor Bidhan Chandra Roy had felt the importance of industrialization in the post era in West Bengal and selected Durgapur to be the industrial city comparable with Manchester of England. He was the main architect for making of the Durgapur Barrage on the river Damodar, Durgapur Steel Plant and many other industries. To feed the resources to those industries, he visualized the importance of power generating station, coke oven for steel and water to the newly planned city of Durgapur and set up the foundation of The Durgapur Projects Ltd (DPL) with an idea of “Industry for Industries”.
Initially, two units namely Unit No. 1 and 2 were set up in the early sixties having 30MW capacities. Another two units having capacity 77MW were set up in the mid sixties in line with the increased demand of power. Further, 5th unit was installed in 2nd half of sixties with capacity 77MW. DPL again, strengthen the capacity by incorporating 6th unit having capacity 110 MW in the eighties.
DPL again enhanced its capacity in viewing the ageing of the old units by incorporating unit seven of capacity 300MW and unit eight of capacity 250MW in the Twenty first century.
In the mean time old units from Unit 1 to 6 have been decommissioned and presently, Unit 7 and Unit 8 are in operating condition.
